TUITION ASSISTANCE FOR FALL 2008
International Students - and United States Students - and Texas Resident Students
please read all for the part that applies to you:
When
international students and United States citizens register for classes,
your tuition bill will be about $7,000. You will then ask for a
"Waiver for In-State Tuition" because you have a TA/AI job (see below
for website for waiver). (Texas residents do not need this
waiver.) The waiver will credit your bill with about $2,900. Now
your bill will be about $7,000, minus $2,900 = $4,100 that you owe.
Next, ask for the "waiver for international student insurance" if you
are an international student. You get this waiver because you
will have insurance through your TA/AI job (see below for the website
for this waiver). This waiver will credit your bill with
about $650. Now your bill will be about $4,100 minus $650 = $3,450.
If
you do not have a Social Security card, you can now pay this $3,450
with a tuition loan (automatic for all TAs/AIs) (see below for
instructions for tuition loan).
If you have a Social Security card, I can do your payroll appointment. Please continue reading.
As
soon as your payroll appointment is done, a credit of $2,444 will
appear on your bill. Your bill $3,450 minus $2,444 = $1,006.
(United States citizens and Texas residents will owe about $906 because
they are not charged certain international student fees.)
If you have this bill for $1,006, or about $906, pay it with the tuition loan.
On
the 12th class day, another tuition assistance check will be issued,
for
$814. But, United States Federal Income Tax will be taken out of
this check, so you will only get about $450 or $500. Use that to
pay part of the tuition loan. You have to pay the rest of the
tuition loan yourself.
Each bill is different, so the figures above are approximate figures. Your bill might be different.
NEW STUDENTS: There will be a $25 charge on your bill for an Alumni Association fee that you will have to pay.
If you have questions, send an email to Nancy Lamm.
TA Scheduler Instructions
You must use your MATH email account to send your schedule.
Send an email to:
ta@math.utexas.edu
The subject line should be: Fall 2008 Schedule
The contents of the message should be the hours you are unable to work
as a TA. Most reasonable formats are acceptable to the program, for
example, the following would work:
MWF 9-10, 1-2
TTH 12:30-2
T 3
A single number translates into an hour time slot, e.g., F 3 means
Friday from 3:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.
Please note that per department TA policy, you may only schedule
yourself for one seminar.
Reminder: You are only eligible for 14 long semesters of support. No
exceptions.
Reminder: You may only block out three class times and one seminar time.

Once the application is submitted, an adjustment will be made to your
tuition and fee bill. You must apply for this entitlement every

qualifying employment appointment by the 50th class day of the semester
or your application will be revoked and you will receive an additional
bill for the non-resident portion of the tuition.
•
Eligibility for this Resident Tuition Entitlement: Out-of-state
residents or international students employed as a TA, AI, or GRA.
International Students - Insurance WaiverAll
international students are automatically charged for the medical
insurance program in your tuition and fee bill. BUT, if you are
employed as a TA, AI, or GRA, this coverage is included in your
pay. Thus, to prevent double coverage (and approx. $650 cost to
you) you must apply for the "Insurance Waiver"

Tuition Assistance - How It WorksFor Fall 2008 and
Spring 2009, tuition assistance will be $3,258 (taxable income).
When your TA or AI payroll appointment is processed, you will see a
credit of $2,444 (75% of the $3,258). Your tuition bill should be

will need to pay the balance on your tuition bill (see tuition loan
instructions at top of this page). After the 12th class day, you
will be issued a check for $814 (25% of the $3,258) minus any income
