Biography

Irene Gamba is a professor in the Department of Mathematics at The University of Texas at Austin, where she holds the W.A. "Tex" Moncrief, Jr. Chair in Computational Engineering and Sciences III. She is also a core faculty member at the Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences, leading the Applied Mathematics Group.

Gamba earned her Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Chicago in 1989. Following her doctorate, she held a National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellowship at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University, where she later became an assistant and associate professor. In 1997, she joined The University of Texas at Austin.

Her research interests include applied and computational analysis, mathematical and statistical physics, and nonlinear kinetic and partial differential equations. She has authored over 100 research articles, with her work funded by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy.

Throughout her career, Gamba has held positions at institutions such as Columbia University, the University of Chicago, École Normale Supérieure in Paris, the Newton Institute at Cambridge University, the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and Kyoto University. She has served on the scientific advisory boards of the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM) at UCLA and the Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute (SAMSI) in North Carolina, and in 2020, she joined the advisory board of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) in Berkeley. Additionally, she has been the chair and program director of the SIAM Activity Group on the Analysis of Partial Differential Equations and currently serves on the editorial boards of several journals, including the Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society and the SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics.

In recognition of her contributions to mathematics, Gamba was named a fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics in 2012 and was among the inaugural fellows of the American Mathematical Society. The Association for Women in Mathematics selected her as the 2014 Sonia Kovalevsky Lecturer.
