Title: Intro to vN algebra II: Modular operator and relative entropy in QFT Abstract: The algebraic approach to quantum systems allows one to study quantum information theoretic properties rigorously. The modular operator plays an important role in studying relative entropies in quantum systems. We introduce modular operator, define relative entropy in quantum field theory and discuss their properties, and draw some intuitions from finite-dimensional quantum systems.If time permits, we go over explicit constructions of different types of algebras (type I, II, III), and show that the local algebra of quantum field theory is of type III_1 using the spectrum of modular operator.
